When you have two elevators sharing the same pit, is there a requirement that you must put a fixed barrier between the two elevators?

ASME A17.1 2004 - 2.2.4.2 There shall be installed in the pit of each elevator, where the pit extends more than 900mm (35 in.) below the sill of the pit access door, a fixed vertical ladder of noncombustible material, located within reach of the access door.

The answer to your question is yes; you need a ladder for each entrance.

Yes it is a common practice to use fall protection when entering a pit, and most of the larger Union companies have that implemented as standard procedure in their safety programs. That being said, there are some other companies that do not have a safety program that covers that.

I do have knowledge of an elevator mechanic that fell 11 feet into a pit while trying to reach for a ladder that was just a little too far away from the opening at the pit level. Due to clearance restraints, there is no other place to locate that particular ladder, so the only thing that could be done to prevent this was to lower a ladder into the pit and use that one instead of the permanently attached ladder.

Is it sometimes a common practice in today's "safety" conscious world to use fall protection
to gain access to elevator pits even if there is a fixed ladder in place?
The issue is the transition from the open hoistway over to the pit ladder.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated on this matter.
